HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County Animal Shelter has recently had a skyrocketing number of animals enter their facility that are in desperate need of homes.

They usually house between 250 and 350 animals in a month, but suddenly their numbers have almost doubled. The facility is now holding closer to 550 animals and is simply out of space. “We do not know for certain the cause behind the spike in animals,” said Animal Shelter Director Melissa Goff. “However, it is likely that people not fixing their animals leading to accidental litters is a large contributor.”

To combat this, the shelter does what they can through their “Get Em Done” program. The program allows them to get as many animals as they can fixed. “If we, the community, could focus on getting more animals fixed, we could greatly slow down the overpopulation of animals we have at the moment,” Goff said.

Large expenses and the rising costs of animal products and food may also contribute to more people surrendering pets. The shelter is continuing to collaborate with local rescues, and Animal Control, to make sure every animal has a safe place to stay.

“As my predecessor always said, teamwork makes the dream work. That is absolutely what it will take to get these numbers under control … teamwork amongst the community,” Goff said.

Come adopt a pet

They are encouraging the community to come and adopt if they are able, and are also looking for new local rescue groups to reach out and help take some animals off their hands. If you want to help, but are unable to adopt, people are also able to sponsor an animals adoption fee, and spread the word about the animals available to adopt.
